Oscar in Portobello Rd Market

London, 28th February 1972

Dears Donna Mother of mine and younger sister (the elder as well), in short, dear all,

A photo arrived of the youngest froggy in the family (don’t tell me that that child doesn’t look like a frog!). Very nice, he looks like his mother with that nose...I am sure that when he grows up he will look as grumpy as the famous Teresa.

Here all is well, with no great news except that a journalist and photographer from the Revista Argentina came over and interviewed me for the magazine. They took some good photos and I enclose a couple.

A couple of Argentinean friends, husband and wife, came to visit and we all had a good time together. I got a letter from Carluccio (remember him?) that made me very happy because I had no news from him for about three years.

Something else that made me happy was to see how beautifull you look in the photo, Alejandrina, it’s surprising the difference the new teeth make. And a bit slimmer you look at least ten years younger, congratulations! And how thin Virginio looks, it’s incredible!

I am working very hard, as usual. Bob Balser, an American friend, called and offered me to participate in an animated film for TV they will make in Europe. That would be a great step forward for me.

Patricia already wrote about the energy crisis, it appears that next week the miners’strike will be resolved. Like a woman said: “What is good about it is that this month the electricity bill will be very low.”

I went to the dentist to have my teeth fixed and I am very pleased with the results, thanks to something called the National Health that means you pay very little for treatment.

The other day we phoned Roberto Garcia but we felt very frustrated because we couldn’t hear a thing. Well, Patricia already told you everything so I will save paper and ink...I send you all the kisses in the world, love to everyone,

Oscar the Big One.

Alejandrina, Delia & Virginio
London, 24th February 1972

Dear Alejandrina and Teresa and Oscar Pablo (or Pablo Oscar?),

We received Alejandrina’s letter and the photos several days ago and only now I have a chance to reply. Oscar hasn’t been able to do it because he’s always very busy. He is working extremely hard but that is exactly what he enjoys because he feels he is making a name for himself as well as having the freedom to choose what he works on. Not only he is earning enough to live well but he also loves his work and on top of that we like this city more and more. Of course this doesn’t mean that we are planning to stay forever, but it would be a pity to waste the opportunity we are being given.

I am also working but as a “free lance” that means they give me occasional work but I am paid better than when working permanently in one place and I have more freedom. So this summer we can go somewhere with a beach and live a little in the open air and sunshine, which by now we are sorely needing. I don’t know if Oscar told you that we bought an ultraviolet lamp to get a bit of a suntan, at least on the face, because we were so pale after a year without sun. Oscar is already quite brown, and it suits him.

We are also planning to go at least for a week to Paris, in March or April. They say that spring is the best time to go there. I hope there won’t be so much work then because Oscar needs a rest after the hard work of the last two months.

Before I forget, we loved the photos you sent, especially those of the baby, who is really a beautiful child and now that he is a little older and more chunky he must be good enough to eat, he is at a lovely stage, probably looking around and trying to grab hold of everything, smiling and altogether scrumptious. I envy you two and can imagine how happy you must be to have him. I hope the grandma doesn’t dote on the baby too much or she will lose the power to think with the pride on her grandson. We can see in the photos that Alejandrina is well, she looks happy and contented. Pity there are no photos of granny but Oscar loved seeing those of auntie Delia and uncle Virginio.

For a month we have been having problems with the electricity supply because of a prolonged coal miners’ strike. Here they use coal to generate electricity so they cut the supply alternately in the various areas of the city to save energy for industry. We have cuts three times a day on Tuesdays and Fridays, and every cut lasts three hours. It is quite inconvenient because it is winter and in the flat everything is electric, so during the cuts we have no cooker or heating and the lift doesn’t work. It must be terrible for families with children or old people. We do not feel it so much because we know when the cut will come and get ready for it. I cook when there is power and we dine by candlelight, very romantic. When they cut the power at work Oscar comes home or goes out so for him the cuts are fun.

Well, I must say good-bye, forgive us for taking so long to answer and write soon.
Lots of kisses to everyone,

Patricia

Queridos Alejandrina y Teresa y Oscar Pablo (¿o Pablo Oscar?):

Bueno, me despido. Perdonen la tardanza y escriban prontísimo. Muchos besos a todos,
Patricia.

Dear mother, sisters, nephews and nieces and everyone within earshot:

We received two letters from you, which I am answering forthwith, with enthusiasm and satisfaction. We are so glad to know that our youngest nephew is growing healthily and happily, thanks to the care (I had written “solicitous” but such word has no place in this sentence). I resume…thanks to the careful care (is this better?) of his mother and grandmother.

We are eating a magnificent “tortillón” with pasta, cooked in collaboration by girly and the undersigned.

Everything is going well, very well to be more exact. Lately we have been missing Buenos Aires and the family, but this is not the best time to go back so we continue taking advantage of the good fortune (let’s say of the opportunity) that has come our way because perhaps it will never come again in our lives.

……….[There is at least a page missing]

Something that deserves noting is the prevalent fashion, that is exactly like that of the 1940s and 1950s, so that around here the women look like you and your friends in the photographs you keep in the wooden, brown case. They wear the fashion with a kind of sense of humour, and with their bright lipstick and blusher they look like clowns.
Platform shoes with very high heels are still in vogue. The guys wear their hair waist long and very, very tight trousers that flare out at the bottom. So the couples look like this:

In my drawing you can see a black man, an Indian and a Chinese woman...well, the racial mix is the best thing about London. If you stand on the pavement you’ll see the whole world go past. There are people of all races, creeds, nationalities and sizes.

The most difficult to find are the English.

Last Saturday we went to the National History Museum, where Tony would have gone mad. They have hundreds of fossil skeletons of prehistoric animals, huge dinosaurs that our little fanatic would love to see. We bought some dinosaur
postcards that we will send him to make him happy.

Well chaps and gals, here goes all our love, kisses and greetings. Write soon and tell us absolutely everything. Ciao,

Oscar

Dear Alejandrina, Teresa and Pablo: I am sending you my best wishes, love and kisses, hugs to everyone! Send us a photo of the child! Ciao,

Patricia

Escriban pronto contando vuestra vida y milagros. Chau,

Oscar

Queridos Alejandrina, Teresa y Pablo: Les mando muchos saludos y besos, abrazos a todos! Manden alguna foto del nene! Chau,

Patricia

It snowed in London, January 1972.

London, 4-1-72

Donna Alejandrina, Donna Teresa, Don Pablo (do not mistake with a certain neighbour) and the rest of the family,

First of all, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We have had a wonderful time.

After almost a month of indecisions, we decided to buy two hefty air tickets (passing for students we paid peanuts) and flew to Italy to spend Christmas and New Year with our friends. We stayed at the home of some Argentinean friends and had a great time. It even snowed on Christmas, to make it more Christmas-like. We were very warmly received and ate and drank in incredible abundance, in short, we were treated like royalty. For New Year’s Eve we all got together at the studio and had a huge bar-b-q. We were 20 people in all. Patricia and I danced the tango and rolled about laughing. Afterwards we returned to London where tomorrow, 5th January 1972, I will resume working like a madman. It seems this year promises to bring good stuff.

5th Jan/72

We bought lots of things in Italy, clothes for Patricia and books (what else?) for me. We took only one suitcase and had to buy another bag to bring everything back.

It’s nice to know one has good friends everywhere one has been. It makes our lives’ horizons wider. Even here, where people seem less warm, I was received with affection today when I went back to work.

How are my sister and my nephew? We have received a letter and postcards, but we would love to get a photo of that young man...tell us all possible anecdotes of him. I can imagine how proud Donna María Morgadinha must be.. . he is her third great grandchild. What a record, man!

A friend of mine who has just returned from Barcelona will soon come and visit you. He is a very nice person, we spent last year’s Christmas with him.
OK, I haven’t got much more to tell you, and Patricia is galloping towards me with a roast lamb dinner.

Millions of kisses and love to you all! Write soon and receive our best wishes of happiness and good luck. Ciao,
Oscar

Kisses, Patricia

Londres, 4-1-72

Sra. Doña Alejandrina, Doña Teresa, Don Pablo (no confundir con cierto vecino) y flía restante:

Ante todo, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”

Chau!
Oscar

This letter is missing at least the first page. I think the date is December 1971

…it was so funny. I, an Argentinean artist, in Paris trying to sell a film by speaking English. It was so funny that the guys at the agency were charmed. I went on my own because the trip was too short and the agency paid for only one ticket.

When I finished my business with the agency I went out for a walk. The evening was beautiful. The city is enchanting. I walked like a madman, through the “Quartier Latin”, looking at the Cafes, cinemas, bookshops, it was fascinating, I felt as if I was part of a film. It was Friday evening so there was a lot of life in the streets. French people and others were celebrating by going into “bistrots” for dinner, to eat like pigs, I was enjoying the show, finding famous streets that are mentioned in literature, Saint Germain-des-Prés, the Rue de Rivoli, Boulevard Saint Michel. Walking along the Seine I came face to face with Notre Dame Cathedral, centuries of history at hand. In the distance I could see the Tour Eiffel lighting the night up. I walked and walked and when I got tires went into a hotel and slept (not too well because of the noise from the street). I wanted to go on seeing things.

We still don’t know where we will spend Christmas, well, I send you my Christmas greetings.

Dear sister Teresa, have the happiest of birthdays. How many so far? And enjoy your birthday all the more with your son (who has a very heroic, glorious, nice, gentle, elegant, pure, sweet and manly name…Oscar!) and tell him not to have such standing up hair as I imagine him. I always think that his hair stands up.

Ah! I paid the telephone bill! If those sons of bitches charge you, send me the bill or whatever and I will arrange everything because this is a quite decent country. What happened is that they changed our telephone number and they could not find us.

Lots and lots of love to everyone, happy festivities, do not miss us because we are enjoying ourselves like royalty… Ciao,

Oscar, the Beautiful

Happy Christmas! Kiss the little, new born “Oscarcito” from me. You couldn’t have chosen a better name, Teresa, it will bring him luck. Lots of kisses for all and write to us telling what the new nephew is like,
Patricia

The sunset seen from our flat's kitchen window

Aún no sabemos dónde vamos a pasar navidad.

Patricia

Alicia's Children were growing very fast. It was nearly two years since we had seen Tony (and the rest of our respective families) who was now the "elder brother" of Mariana, whom we had not met yet.

Here there is a gap in the letters, Alejandrina didn't keep some of them. They must have been very busy with Pablito, Teresa's baby, who had just been born. Suddenly we got the photo, where he looks very grown up indeed. We were missing everything.

Alejandrina no guardó algunas cartas.
