That year my own mother emigrated to Ibiza with my 14 year old sister. They began a new life as hippy artisans and enjoyed it no end.

Dear Mother, sisters, granny, nephews, brother in law, uncles, aunts, cousins and family in general,

In the first place I congratulate you, mother, on your birthday (how many years?) I hope you’ve had a magnificent day in the company of the presents they must have given you. I already owe you three birthday presents but do not despair; there surely will be occasion to give you one.

Well, in the second place, I beg forgiveness for not writing before but I have been (am) working very hard and my wife, a woman called Patricia, went to Spain to visit her mother and left me to my own devices, for which reason I’ve had to cook, wash my underwear and the dishes, all of which I have done both efficiently and with professionalism.

Patricia is back now, very sun tanned and looking like a gipsy. At this very moment she is cleaning the kitchen while I write sitting on the carpet and dressed only in a pair of underpants (it is very hot) and listening to the radio. It’s nine o’clock pm and I can see a very blue sky through the window. Patricia brought the little doll in the tiny basket you gave her mother to bring to us. Thank you!

Life doesn’t change much around here, our knowledge of the language is improving, and friends come and go. We are planning to celebrate our five-year anniversary and my 30th birthday with a gigantic barbecue or something similar, at a friend’s house, which has a garden.

I am working hard and becoming fairly well known. A few days ago I saw on the window of the “British Film Institute” a magazine that mentioned my name in an article about animation. I’ll send you a copy of the publication. I have a senior position at a new animation studio where I am very well paid and do good stuff.

An old Disney animator who worked on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” (one of the first animated films I remember seeing) has been giving lectures about my profession. He had been in Argentina in 1942 and spoke a little Spanish. Needless to say, I learnt a good deal from him. Also, I went to Paris to take part in a seminary on animation.

So, there is meat rationing in Argentina? Patricia and I wouldn’t be too worked up because we have joined the ranks of the vegetarians and we feel very well for it. The thing is that here the meat is so horrible and expensive that we stopped buying it. We realized that we often had to throw it away and started eating more and more cereals and vegetables. Here there are places called “Health food shops” that sell food grown without fertilizers and artificial additives. Everything is pure and natural. This is not to say that we are fanatical vegetarians, on the contrary. Yesterday, for instance, we ate some hefty chunks of meat at a Greek restaurant.

How is the family? Patricia told me that her mother said that Tony is very beautiful and a bit of a rascal. I am always meaning to write to Alicia and Carlos but as you can see I never have time for anything. I take this opportunity to send them big hugs and greetings and the same for granny and her family and Teresa and her son.

As dessert I send you a big kiss and congratulations again on your birthday.
Ciao, much love,
Oscar

I also send my best but belated wishes …I hope everyone is well, kisses and hugs!

Patricia

Estoy trabajando mucho y me hago bastante conocido.

Patricia

Notting Hill era mucho menos elegante.

Notting Hill was much less elegant.

Pembridge Road, Notting Hill Gate

London, June 1973

Dear Alejandrina and family,

Spring Saturday. I’m writing while sitting on a bench in the square. Next to me a lady is resting, with a little flower posy in her hand. A bearded lad goes by with a girl dressed in purple. Someone is sawing in a house opposite, the birds sing.
Your letter arrived and also one from granny. Her letter brings me a photo and the news of aunt Eugenia’s death. Give my condolences to uncle Luis.

A small blond boy walks by, very seriously, carrying a red bag on his shoulder. A man with a very long mane crosses the street with a little white dog. There is a spring evening’s breeze and having just showered I am thoroughly enjoying it. I have shaved my beard and left only the moustaches and I look like Pancho villa. I think that letting one’s beard grow during the winter and getting rid of it in the summer is a very good habit.

A yellow car stops in front of me and robs me of a chunk of the view. No matter, as to write a letter it’s not necessary to look at the opposite pavement all the time. On the other hand, perhaps it is?

Yes!! The letters you send never tell me about what’s going on across the road and that is something I really want to know. Granny’s letter (I am answering it) is a real literary masterpiece…not because of the grammatical mistakes, which are many, but because she expresses herself with such grace and warmth.

Four women have just met, each with two dogs, making a total of eight dogs that are getting entangled and smelling each other to their hearts content.

Next to me sits a gentleman, very well groomed, dressed in brown. A peroxide blonde crosses the street in a very dignified way. Well, I think it’s time to go home, I’ll carry on later.

I continue a couple of days later:

I would love it if in the next letter you tell me more about your lives, your projects and aspirations. It would be nice to open a channel of communication fitting for adult people who can tell each other serious and meaningful things in addition to words of endearment.

We received some issues of a humour magazine from Córdoba and they want me to send drawings. Also, from Uruguay they asked me for some work. The Argentine triumphs!

Patricia is a filthy person; she is gallivanting around in her underwear…
aaaarrrgghh!!! She is being a nuisance and tries to stop me writing. I am lying on the rug and she taunts me. In case you are wandering, we were not in the plane that crashed at London Airport. We are very well and happy.
Kisses to everyone, ciao,
Oscarcito

PS: Do not send letters by registered or express post, it makes it difficult for us to get them. Just send them by ordinary air mail.

Oscar en el barrio

Londres, Junio 1973

Mandale mis condolencias a tío Luis.
