Albufeira, Junio de 1976

London, August 1976

Dear mother, sisters, brothers in law, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and grannies,

I will be brief because I am running late and have to go to work (we are eating cold left over pizza as breakfast)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOTHER!

Happy birthday also to myself, I will be 33 years old and still so much to do (I don’t understand this assertion but it sounds good). Today I am in “jocular vein”.
Portugal is very, very nice, with lots of old ladies that looked like granny and men that looked like some uncle of ours or Don José. There were also figs, hotels full of Germans, sand, briny water, houses decorated with colourful tiles, posters for the elections, tiny dogs with miserable faces, grass, pine trees, very blue skies, plenty of mopeds, noise, policemen wearing ridiculous hats, hippies, colonial black people, hilly streets to tire you when going for a walk, post-cards, newspapers called “O Seculo”, sports newspapers called “A bola, Jornal Desportivo”, hairdressers called “cabelereiros” tiny women who are pretty (to my surprise because I thought that Portuguese women were like the Galicians!), etc.
In my next letter I will tell you more, I have to leave for work now.
Kisses to all,
Oscar

Dear Alejandrina and family,

Here are some photos taken during our holidays. We had a lovely time, Algarve is very beautiful, it looks prosperous, the fields are all tilled and sown and the sea is fantastic and so are the people. We eat figs until we couldn’t eat any more and other delicious fruits, which are abundant. We thought a lot of you and especially granny.
Back in London we returned to work and summer is nearly over. I have almost finished painting the house and we’ll have a party to celebrate Oscar’s birthday and our anniversary (8 years!). Meanwhile, the garden is looking stunning, we have tomatoes, green beans, spinach and lettuce. Fantastic! Today I harvested the first green beans and we have a glut of tomatoes. The rose bushes, of many colours, have been flowering for a long time. Amongst them we have a yellow rose with red edges, like the ones you used to bring me in Buenos Aires, do you remember, Alejandrina?
It was great to talk to you on the phone the other day. It’s good to know you have already got over your operation. I hope both Alicia and Teresa and their husbands and children are all fine and give everyone my love and many kisses to you from
Patricia

Felíz cumpleaños a mí mismo.

The weather became a little better but never very warm. In those days, when the sun came out we had to make the most of it

Our frosty back garden - Nuestro jardincito helado

London, 4th February 1976

Dear Alejandrina,

We got your enormous packet of “yerba” three days ago! Millions of thanks! And today, your letter arrived. It’s us who have to apologize for not writing. We don’t forget but we are both working very hard and as you know, when there is a free moment one doesn’t feel like writing, especially when some time has gone by. We have such a backlog of letters to answer that I put them in a box because the folder where I kept them was too small. They will keep waiting because you are always first in the list. As a result, we are getting less and less letters; people get understandably fed up with us for not answering so this time I mean to get up to date in order to start receiving letters again. It is so nice to get news from people! That’s how we know that you like to get our letters as well, and promise not to get behind again.

OK, congratulations to the newly weds and the future weds. Also to Carlos and Alicia for their new house, it’s a great idea, you are going to be much better all together. Has Teresa fixed a date for the wedding? It looks like everyone is getting married nowadays, as you know my brother got married in early December, she is English, her name is Deborah and they call her Debbie. She is nice and they are in love, very happy. In about six months they are going to Mexico because she has a student grant for a year. In the summer it seems they will be going to Ibiza to join my mum and Pamela. At the moment they are in London and in the spring they’ll go back to Ibiza. Mum wants to go back to Argentina but the trip is very expensive and she has to think about it carefully. We’ll see.

Oscar and I are as always, very well, happy with our little house and working hard but we enjoy it. Something we are missing is the good weather, I am longing for the spring to start planting things in the garden and to carry on painting the house. At the moment it’s extremely cold, the coldest it has been since we live here.
However, we mustn’t complain because until now the weather has been very good and almost mild. We had a long sunny summer and only at the end of January the cold started with a vengeance.

OK Alejandrina, I will write to granny now because we’ve had her letter for a long time without replying. Many kisses to all the Grillos and Gambinos and for you a big embrace and a kiss from

Patricia

PS: We don’t know the postal code for your area or granny’s. The letters would arrive faster if you send it to us. Ask at the post office. Ciao!

From the front garden - Desde el jardin del frente.

Querida Alejandrina:

Vamos a ver qué pasa.

Chau!

Una carta incompleta - An incomplete letter

On his way to work Oscar was going to post a letter.

London, September 1975

Dear mum, sisters, brothers in law nephews and nieces,

It’s autumn again. The leaves of all the trees around our house have had the great idea of falling in our back garden and patio, obstructing the drains and making us feel romantic.
The first mists have begun, making the landscape very poetic and cars more liable to crash.
The IRA terrorists make the most of the early darkness to place bombs hither and dither, blowing up hotels and rubbish bins indiscriminately.
On television they are showing the same old series they show every autumn. We stay at home more (although, to tell the truth, we do not as a rule go out very much anyway), and so on.
I apologize for not writing more often but I swear I have no time at all. Already two upstairs rooms are painted as well as the landing and stairs…

(Here the letter is interrupted. The rest of the pages are missing. )
