A long, hot summer - Un verano soleado y cálido

London, 30th November 1989
Dear Alejandrina,

As usual, time flies and we do not write. We have no shame! Luckily, we cannot say things are going badly for us. We all are healthy, happy and busy. That is precisely the problem: we are too busy. The children have so many extracurricular activities that I am always coming or going somewhere. Now that Pablo is independent during the day, with his own key, his bicycle and friends who call him or come to meet him, it gets dark so early that I still have to collect him because I don’t like him going around by himself at night. I can’t get away from it!

I have some photos that I am not sure I have sent you, although they are from the summer. If you already have them give them to Alicia and Teresa. The one of Pablo was taken at school and I am sure I haven’t sent it because it is recent. As I say, we are very well on spite of the winter weather. It came suddenly; there is a frost every morning with temperatures 2 or 3 degrees below zero at night. It could be that the winter will be very cold because we’ve had a long and hot summer. Luckily it is sunny so the cold doesn’t matter.

In October we bought a little rabbit. It was 2 months old and very small and lovely. It has floppy years and at first both years dropped to the same side, which was very sweet, but now they have settled one either side of its head. It is called Timothy and is white with black nose and ears and black spots all over. It has grown about 200grs in two weeks! Already is quite big but has some more growing to do, so it will be large. As the weather is cold but nice, I let him run around in the garden and he takes shelter in the side lean-to where I keep the plants. He eats grass and runs everywhere. When it gets dark I put him in the hatch I made with wood and chicken wire. It is in the lean-to, opposite the kitchen window, so we can watch him from inside. At first we let him run around in the kitchen but he wees and poos everywhere and that is very unhygienic now he is bigger. Francesca is besotted and Oscar, who did not want to hear about having a pet, confessed he likes the bunny (although not the wee and poo). It will be nice to see him run around in the garden during the summer. I hope he will not eat my plants too much! In any case, there is enough space in the garden and I don’t think a lone rabbit can do too much damage.

I haven’t written to Alicia for so long that I don’t remember who wrote last. Give my love to both sisters and to the children and the Carloses. I know from you that they are all well. I would like to be able to write more often, but you are so many! When I write to my dad, mum and to you and one or other of my aunts, it is already a special occasion. I used to have more spare time and it was easy to be in touch. Now it is ever more difficult. Today I am minding my neighbour’s younger little girl because she had to go out and her daughter is a bit poorly. I am taking the chance to write because the baby fell asleep and I have nothing to do. Aren’t I lucky!
I hope you will write soon and tell me how everyone is. The situation over there is ugly, how do you all cope?

What you tell us about Pablo is so nice; it would be good if he chooses to go into music and radio broadcasting. One of my cousins is a disk jockey; he never wanted to study and took up organising parties and disk jockeying. He is so successful now that is earning more than his father (who is a doctor, they are the ones who live in Victoria, near San Fernando). So you never know.
What about Tony, how is he doing now he has graduated? And Mariana? I would like to know about them all. I will say goodbye, let’s see if Oscar also writes, although today he is coming home late so I am sure that I will send this and let him write later.
Lots of kisses,
Patricia

Querida Alejandrina,

¡No me salvo!

Muchos besos,

Patricia
