Winter 1993 - Invierno 1993

London, 20th February 1993

Dear Alejandrina,

It’s been a long time since I wrote but today I am taking the plunge. It is Sunday and everyone is busy, the children with their friends and Oscar with his clarinet. The spring is getting near for us (and autumn for you). This winter has seemed very long to me and there is still some way to go to finish with the cold but at least days are getting longer (during November and December it gets dark already at 4.30 pm!). Already there is blossom on pavement trees and in the gardens and some trees are showing the tips of new leaves. That makes people feel happy because it shows that spring is coming for sure. The winter has never affected me like it has this year; it’s been very wet and grey and it seemed much longer than usual.

It will soon be a year since Francesca started the new school and she has progressed enormously. It is more of a sacrifice for her because the journey there and back is much longer and on top of working hard all day she has a lot of homework every day, but it is worth it because she has improved a lot. The struggle during the summer and the upsets trying to get her up to standard during the summer have born fruit, especially in Maths. In two more years she can get into a secondary school near home, which will be such a relief! So for now we have to carry on making an effort.
It seems incredible that Pablo is already about to sit his final exams to finish the last stage of secondary school. He will leave that school and start (if he passes the exam) two years at a tertiary college. If he gets the grades he needs he’ll be able to get into the college he wants. During the two years he will prepare only three subjects (in my opinion the system of education in this country is quite inferior) and he chose Biology, Art and English. If he has good grades in those subjects he will get into university, depending in the career of his choice. But for now we have to make sure he gets the best possible grades in these exams.
Although the economic situation in this country does not seem to improve and unemployment is rising, as well as the number of people under the poverty line, Oscar is always working well because the studio works mainly for companies abroad. However, the type of work they have to accept shows how things have deteriorated, but at least they have not had to dismiss any member of the team.

We are, in general, carry on as usual, respectively working and studying most of the time, although Pablo manages to dedicate a lot of time to going out as well as to his studies. He had marvellous grades and very good reports from his teachers. It is obvious that he has been applying himself and has grown very mature and conscientious.

On her part, Francesca still needs to be pushed a little or she wouldn’t do much, but with a bit of encouragement she makes an effort but I end up exhausted, what with the school run, the homework and the piano practice. I think that in the past two years I have aged ten. But, of course, I have learned a lot about fractions, grammar, composition and theory of music.
Lots of kisses,
Patricia

Dear mama,
Here go a few quick lines to accompany Patricia’s letter. Here we are, after a dinner of boiled potatoes (left over from yesterday), chicken breasts and red peppers with oil and garlic.
Francesca reads a book, Patricia cuts up a pineapple, Pablo does his homework and I write (in pyjamas and sleepers and a necktie). I’ve had a haircut and looking in the mirror I thought I was facing Gorbachov, only the birthmark on my forehead is missing. It’s winter but the temperature is not too low, about 13 C or so, but it rains a lot. It gets dark early and life goes on. Patricia is now telling me about a terrible illness that causes blindness through a parasite that lives in cat’s excrement and from there she goes on to talk about telephones. As you can see, everything is going well (otherwise we would be fighting like cat and dog)
Pablo grows taller and Francesca grows toothier. She still has the habit of reading at the table and takes ages to finish eating. On Saturday we went to see an Argentinean film (“In some place in the world” with Federico Luppi) and in the car we finished listening to Alicia’s tape, which we had pending. Everybody well? Here we are all hunky dory. A very big kiss from your bald son.
Cheers,Griyo…

Londres, 20 de febrero 1993

Querida Alejandrina:

Griyo.
