Winter, 1986 - Invierno, 1986

London, 3rd February 1986

Dear Alejandrina,

I have to apologize, as usual, for taking so long to write. We haven’t written to anybody for a long time! Today I decided to leave everything else and sit down to write. Seriously, I have at least 8 or 9 letters to answer, which are months behind. I realize that it must be very hard for you not to get news and everyday I think of you waiting, but days, weeks and months fly by.
Summarizing, we had a very nice Christmas period, at home and at friends places. Here one starts celebrating 1 or 2 weeks before Christmas and people invite each other for meals and parties, but on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we like to stay together at home, especially now that we have the children. Then at New Year we usually go to someone’s house but this year, as Francesca cannot stay up late, we stayed at home. We went to some friends’ house after the 1st January and on Saturday 5th we celebrated Francesca’s birthday, so we had a prolonged period of celebration. It was very nice and afterwards we got back to our daily routine of comings and goings, work and school.

The teachers here have been on strike for a year but they do not stop altogether, they send the children home one afternoon every one or 2 weeks, or close the school for a day. It is a pity because everything is interrupted the kids get behind and the strike does not achieve anything. The government is not budging and the problem continues unresolved.

Francesca and Pablo have grown bigger and she no longer a baby but a little girl. She is still in nappies because it is too cold to teach her to sit on the potty; the best thing is to be able to let her wear little clothing so she can go to the toilet and that means we will have to wait until the summer. She already knows what it is all about, understands what the toilet is for and lets us know when she has wet herself; I think that as soon as she is left without nappies she will learn.

Pablo is wonderfully handsome and well behaved. He continues learning to swim, already can do a whole length and back and although his style is not very elegant he is perfecting it.

I will leave some space for Oscar and he will write you some lines tonight, while I am at my Italian class (I go every Monday at 7 pm). In the meantime, a very big kiss from the children and from me a kiss and a hug,

Querida Alejandrina:

Como siempre, tengo que disculparme por haber tardado tanto en contestarle. ¡Hace tanto que no escribimos a nadie! Hoy decidí dejar todo lo demás y ponerme a escribir. Sin bromas, tengo como mínimo 8 o 9 cartas que escribir con meses de retardo. Ya sé que debe ser terrible para Ud no recibir noticias y pienso todos los días en que está esperando. Pero los días, semanas y meses pasan volando.

Para recapitular, pasamos muy lindas fiestas, en casa y en casas de amigos. Aquí se empieza a celebrar 1 o 2 semanas antes de navidad y se invita mutuamente a amigos a comer o a reuniones y en Nochebuena y Navidad nos gtusta estar en casa juntos, sobre todo ahora con los chicos. Después viene Año Nuevo, que generalmente pasamos en casa de alguien, pero este año por Francesca, que no puede quedarse levantada muy tarde, nos quedamos en casa. Fuimos a comer a casa de amigos después del 1º y el domingo 5 le hicimos la fiestita de cumpleaños a Francesca. Así que tuvimos festejos prolongados. Fue muy lindo y luego volvimos a la rutina de todos los días, con las idas y venidas, el trabajo y la escuela. Aquí los maestros hace un año que están en huelga, pero no paran del todo, sino que cada semana o dos mandan los chicos a casa a la tarde, o cierran la escuela por un día. Es una lástima porque se interrumpe todo y los chicos se atrasan y la huelga no llega a nada. El gobierno no da el brazo a torcer y el problema sigue sin resolverse.

Francesca y Pablo crecieron más y ella ya es una nenita y no un bebé. Todavía usa pañales porque hace mucho frío para enseñarle a usar la pelela, ya que lo ideal es tenerla con poca ropa para que pueda ir al baño, o sea que tenemos que esperar al verano. Ella ya sabe de qué se trata y entiende para qué es el baño y avisa cuando se hace pis, yo creo que en cuanto la deje sin pañales enseguida va a aprender.
Pablo está tan lindo y serio que dá gusto, sigue aprendiendo a nadar y ya se hace su pileta entera ida y vuelta y aunque su estilo no es muy elegante, ya lo va perfeccionando.

Le voy a dejar un poco de lugar a Oscar para que le escriba, a ver si ésta noche, mientras me voy a mi clase de italiano (voy todos los lunes a las 7 de la tarde), él le hace unas líneas.
