London, Tuesday 16th July 1985 Dear Alejandrina,

We have the tickets in our hands at last and can say with absolute certainty that we will arrive on 5th August. The London-Rio flight is Varig RG757, and the connection Río-Buenos Aires is Varig RG916. The latter is the important one but it is convenient to have both flights to phone for information in case there is any delay. The problem is that there aren’t many direct flights to Buenos Aires and we have to change plane in Rio. We arrive around 11.30 am but it would be a good idea for you to confirm by telephone before setting off to Ezeiza airport.

We have received your last letter; of course we do not want you, Teresa or anybody else to worry about us. We would like to arrive with the least confusion possible and be taken anywhere you want. Alicia asked me whether we will go to their house and I think that would be the best thing, because Teresa will come to meet us with you, I imagine, so we can all go back to Teresa and Alicia’s house and spend the afternoon together there. There will be time to see the rest of the relatives later. I have told my aunts and my father that they shouldn’t bother meeting us at the airport, as it makes no sense for everyone to come when we can only leave with one group. There will be plenty of time to see everybody at leisure.
I am sure that the first day will be naturally chaotic; the children (specially Francesca) will be very tired and so will we. It would be nice to be only with you and then leave and go to bed early (who knows if we’ll be able to sleep in the plane at all).

I don’t think Oscar will have time to reply to your letter, that is why I am writing myself. In any case, in only two more weeks we will see each other! Everything is ready except for packing; we are leaving that for last, but I am sure that on the last day something I’ll be running around in a panic.

Oscar is trying to finish things as quickly as possible to avoid saddling his partner with too much work. He is also going regularly to a TV studio to take part in a programme that will go on air in October, in which he tells stories for children and, at the same time, illustrating them on camera. Did you ever think that your son would be a television star?

OK Alejandrina, I still have several letters to write and very little time. I will say goodbye and again I ask you not to worry; Oscar is well, he doesn’t think badly of you and none of all those things you are imagining are true. He loves you very much and was very surprised by your last letter. His manner is a little terse, he is Oscar and that is the way he is, but he is very happy about this trip and we are both impatient to see you all. It would be very nice to be with you, Alicia and Teresa and their husbands and children and spend time quietly together (taking mate!). I don’t think anyone will be offended. My aunts understood immediately and my dad will await my call as arranged. Now I really will say goodbye, with lots of kisses, until the fifth of August!

Al fin tenemos los pasajes en la mano y podemos decir con plena seguridad que llegamos el 5 de agosto. El vuelo desde Londres a Río es RG757 de Varig y el de Río a Buenos Aires es el RG916 Varig. Este último es el que importa, pero por eso si hay algún atraso o algo es mejor tener los dos para averiguar por teléfono. Lo que pasa es que como no hay vuelos directos a Buenos Aires tenemos que cambiar de avión en Río. Llegamos a eso de las 11.30 del mediodía pero eso también les conviene confirmar a ustedes por teléfono antes de salir para Ezeiza.
Recibimos su última carta y, por supuesto, no queremos que Ud ni Teresa ni nadie se preocupe por nosotros ni se hagan problemas. Lo que quisiéramos es llegar con el mínimo de confusión y que nos lleven a donde Uds. quieran. Alicia me pregunta si vamos a ir a casa de ellos y me parece que lo más fácil sería eso; ya que Teresa nos va a ir a buscar, con Ud. me imagino, al aeropuerto, que vayamos a casa de Teresa y Alicia y que estemos todos juntos esa tarde. Después ya habrá tiempo de ver a los demás familiares. Yo les dije a mis tías y a mi papá que no se preocupen de ir a buscarnos porque no sirve de nada que aparezcan varios en el aeropuerto si sólo nos podemos ir con un grupo. Va a haber bastante tiempo para ver a todos con calma. Pero ese primer día será ya de por sí caótico, con los chicos (sobre todo Francesca) muy cansados y nosotros también. Sería lindo estar con ustedes solamente y después irnos temprano a dormir (quién sabe si dormiremos en el avión).

No creo que Oscar tenga tiempo de contestar su carta, por eso le escribo yo. Igual falta tan poco para vernos...¡sólo 2 semanas! Ya tenemos todo listo menos las valijas hechas, ya que hay que dejarlas para último momento, pero seguro que algo va a faltar el último día y habrá corridas.

Oscar está terminando sus cosas lo más rápido posible para no dejar al socio con un bagallo. Además está teniendo que ir de vez en cuando a un estudio de televisión porque están preparando un programa que va a salir al aire en octubre, en el que Oscar dibuja y cuenta historias para los chicos. ¿Se imaginaba que su hijo iba a ser estrella de televisión?

Bueno Alejandrina, tengo varias cartas que escribir y poco tiempo. Me despido y otra vez no se preocupe que Oscar está bien y no piensa mal de Ud. y todas esas cosas que Ud. se imagina no son así. El la quiere mucho y se sorprendió mucho de su última carta. Es solamente su manera un poco brusca, él es Oscar y es así; pero está muy contento de este viaje y los dos estamos impacientes por verlos. Sería lindo estar con Ud., Alicia y Teresa junto con sus maridos y nenes y pasarlo tranquilitos entre nosotros (¡TOMANDO MATE!). No creo que por eso se ofenda nadie…mis tias entendieron enseguida y mi papá esperará mi llamada como le prometí. Ahora si me despido con muchos besos y ¡hasta el 5 de agosto!

Preparation for the trip to Argentina - Preparativos del viaje a Argentina

London, 15th March 1985

Dear Alejandrina,

As always, I have to apologize for taking so long to write. Your second letter since our phone call arrived to our shame because we haven’t written in a long time. To deserve your forgiveness, I am sending some photos.

About our trip, we are waiting for Francesca’s passport and as soon as we get it we will apply for visas for the children to get into Argentina and us to get back to England. Only then will we be able to decide on a date and buy our tickets. However, we have only a month in which to travel, during Pablo’s school holidays, from the end of July to early September. It is too short a time after almost 11 years, to be there, but Oscar cannot leave work for longer than a month either. It will be great though and for Pablo an unbelievable experience.
Thank you for offering your flat, I hope that’ll cause you no problems. Regarding beds, we only need one for us and for Pablo a mattress would do, because we are taking a folding travel cot for Francesca. It is easy to dispatch, as it is the size of a suitcase. In it she can sleep anywhere. Please don’t be inconvenienced on our account, please tell us if this is truly a practical arrangement, we don’t want to kick you out of your home.

There is something I want to ask you: a list of Teresa and Alicia’s children with measurements and sizes. Of course we know about them but their sizes are very difficult to imagine. If possible, tell us what does each of them like and so we know what to bring them, otherwise I will have to buy any old thing and I might make terrible mistakes. For instance, I remember Mariana as a little girl and I cannot imagine her older, although I’ve seen photos. We don’t know Nani, I couldn’t begin to imagine little Pablo and the same with Carolina. I would like to bring things they will really like and can use and their ages and tastes are important. Could you do me that favour? With a little list it will be much easier. How time flies!

Well, Alejandrina, the youngest of the Grillos is about to wake up and I have to collect my eldest from a birthday party. Oscar will soon be home and I have to cook dinner. As you can see in the photos the four of us are very well. I cut my hair short and Oscar shaved his beard and looks 20 years younger. He is looking pretty and is healthy (apart from some colds) and the children are lovely and beautiful. I cannot wait for you to see them; we are going to have a great time!

Querida Alejandrina:

Como siempre, tengo que pedir perdón por tardar tanto en escribir. Llegó su segunda carta desde la llamada telefónica y nos dio mucha vergüenza no haber escrito en todo este tiempo.
Para hacernos perdonar, mando unas fotitos.
Hablando de nuestro viaje, estamos esperando el pasaporte de Francesca y en cuanto lo tengamos hay que pedir visas para los chicos para entrar en Argentina y para nosotros para poder volver a Inglaterra. Recién entonces podremos sacar los pasajes y saber exactamente la fecha pero, como tenemos que ir durante las vacaciones de Pablo, tenemos sólo desde fin de julio hasta principios de septiembre para viajar, o sea un mes. Es poquísimo tiempo después de casi 11 años pero Oscar tampoco puede dejar el trabajo más de un mes. Va a ser fantástico y para Pablo una experiencia increíble.

Muchas gracias por ofrecernos el departamento, espero no causarle problemas.
En cuanto a camas, solo necesitamos una para nosotros y un colchón aunque sea para Pablo, ya que a Francesca le llevamos una cunita de viaje que se pliega y es muy fácil de llevar como una valija más. Ella ahí duerme en cualquier lugar. No quisiera que por nosotros Ud se incomode, me gustaría que nos diga en serio si ese arreglo es práctico. ¡No queremos desalojarla!

Algo que quiero pedirle es una lista de los chicos de Teresa y Alicia (ya sé que sabemos de ellos, pero es difícil imaginar los tamaños) con edades y medidas, y si es posible qué le gusta a cada uno para saber qué llevarles. Si no, les tengo que comprar cualquier cosa que se me ocurra y por ahí me equivoco de medio a medio.
Por ejemplo, a Mariana la recuerdo chiquita y no puedo imaginármela grande, aunque ví fotos. A nani no lo conocemos, a Pablito ni trato de imaginarlo y lo mismo a Carolina. Me gustaría llevarles algo que realmente les guste y les sirva, de manera que los gustos y las edades son importantes. ¿Me haría ese favor?
Si tuviera una listita sería más fácil. ¡El tiempo pasa tan rápido!

Bueno, Alejandrina, la más chica de los Grillos se va a despertar de un momento a otro y al mayor lo tengo que ir a buscar a una fiesta de cumpleaños. Oscar va a llegar pronto y tengo que cocinar. Como verá por las fotos los cuatro estamos bien. Yo me corté el pelo y Oscar se afeitó la barba y parece 20 años más jóven. Está lindo y bien de salud (aparte de los resfríos) y los chicos están lindos y simpáticos. No veo la hora de que los vea. ¡Qué bien que lo vamos a pasar!

11 Years since the last visit - A 11 años desde la última visita

London, 25th January 1985

Dear Alejandrina,

Your package arrived a few days ago and it was a nice surprise. You are always so kind with us, who don’t deserve it because we take ages to write back, we have no shame! I was waiting to receive the prints of the children’s Christmas photos to send you some.

Your granddaughter is so delightful and naughty! She is about to start walking but not trying very hard yet because she is happy to crawl or walk holding on to the furniture. Also, she has learned to climb the stairs and we have to be very careful because she is always ready to dart towards the stairs whenever the door is left open.She is lovely and extremely coquettish; flirts with everybody, especially boys, and she adores visitors and activities of any kind.

You will be meeting her soon because it seems that around August we’ll be going over there. We are in the process of getting Francesca a passport and afterwards we will get visas and tickets. We are quite glad we have decided to go but we still have to fix the best date to avoid Pablo missing school days and ensure Oscar can leave work for a month. We also need to find a place to stay in Buenos Aires.

It seems impossible that this year will be the 11th anniversary of our last trip to our country! Anyway, in the meantime here go the Christmas photos and soon the models will be there in person.
I hope you are well and again thank you very much for everything. Ah! This time the “dulce de leche” arrived perfectly well; although the pot cracked, the plastic bag held it together. Delicious. Many thanks for the lovely little bag and the “yerba” mate is very well appreciated over here!

Querida Alejandrina,

Hace unos días llegó el paquete y fue una linda sorpresa. Ud. siempre tan amable con nosotros, que no nos lo merecemos ya que tardamos un siglo en escribir. ¡No tenemos vergüenza! Yo esperaba recibir las copias de las fotos que les saqué a los chicos en Navidad para mandarle algunas.

Su nieta es una pícara simpatiquísima y ya está a punto de caminar aunque todavía no hace mucho esfuerzo y se conforma con gatear y caminar agarrándose de los muebles. También aprendió a subir la escalera y hay que tener mucho cuidado porque está siempre lista para aprovechar que dejen la puerta abierta para escaparse a la escalera. Es muy rica y coquetísima, siempre les hace ojitos a la gente, sobre todo a los muchachos, y le encanta la actividad y las visitas. Pronto ya va a poder conocerla porque parece que nos vamos a pegar una vueltita por allá nomás.
Será para alrededor de agosto. Ahora estamos en tren de sacarle el pasaporte a Francesca y después pediremos las visas y sacaremos los pasajes.Estamos bastante entusiasmados con el viaje pero aún tenemos que resolver el asunto de la fecha para que Pablo pierda lo menos posible de escuela y Oscar pueda dejar el estudio por un mes. También tenemos que ver dónde pararíamos en Buenos Aires. ¡Parece mentira que este año va a hacer 11 años de nuestra visita a los pagos!
En fin, mientras tanato, aquí van las fotos sacadas en Navidad y pronto irán los modelos. Espero que Ud. siga bien y otra vez gracias por todo.
¡Ah! El dulce de leche esta vez llegó perfecto. Solamente se rajó el pote, pero al estar en la bolsa de plástico no se salió nada. Muy rico.
