Half term holiday in Ibiza - Vacaciones de octubre en Ibiza
End of October 1991
Dear Alejandrina,
Your letter with the pretty embroidery, which Francesca quickly put in her jacket pocket to carry everywhere, has arrived.
I didn’t want to leave it so long before replying, so I take the opportunity now that I am writing to my aunts. We have been in Ibiza for a week, visiting my mum and now we are back to work. The children are very busy studying, luckily, and if Francesca passes the entrance exam to get into a new school she will be very relieved because at the moment she is working hard with a private tutor after school to prepare for the exam, poor thing. Pablo is doing very well, he also has serious exams coming in a couple of years and is already being prepared for that. He also attends clarinet and Spanish lessons (in May he is sitting an Spanish exam) after school. They have to make the most of the chance to study and if Francesca passes the exam he will go to a much better school where she will be made to work hard and wont have to study after school to keep up.
I found my mum in very good health, it seems that the trip to Argentina did her “a world of good”, as they say in Spain. Now that she is a pensioner and has given up her workshop, into which she put a great deal of effort, she’s got a lot of plans to travel, rest and enjoy herself. She might get depressed when she finds herself alone, after such a long time dealing with visitors to the workshop, but I think that when she gets used to not working like a mule she will feel much better. For the moment her spirits are up and she is healthy.
Today Oscar went to Barcelona to work for two days. He will see Roberto García, at least for a while in the evening. It appears that García is not well, so Oscar’s visit will be good for him.
Well, at the moment my cousins are getting married right, left and centre and I have to write to all of my aunts. Many kisses to you from this cold London, from Oscar, Pablo, Francesca and

I like the collar you sent me and one day I would like to visit you. Excuse my not writing to you before. I am working very hard for school and I also play the piano.

Fin de octubre 1991Querida Alejandrina:
Llegó su carta con el lindo bordadito, que Francesca se guardó enseguida en el bolsillo del saco y lo lleva a todas partes.
No quería dejar pasar tanto tiempo otra vez sin contestarle, así que aprovecho que estoy escribiéndoles a mis tías. Pasamos una semana en Ibiza con mamá y ahora estamos de vuelta al trabajo. Los chicos están estudiando mucho, por suerte, y si Francesca pasa el examen en enero para entrar en una escuela nueva, ya va a quedar más aliviada porque ahora está trabajando mucho después de la escuela haciendo deberes para una maestra particular, para prepararse para el examen, pobre. Pablo va muy bien también porque él tiene exámenes serios dentro de dos años y ya se está preparando desde ahora. También tiene clases de clarinete y español (dará un examen en mayo) fuera de la escuela. Tienen que aprovechar y estudiar ahora que pueden. Si pasa, Francesca va a ir a una escuela muy buena donde los hacen trabajar mucho y no va a tener que sacrificarse tanto después de horas para adelantar.
A mamá la encontré muy bien, parece que el viaje a la Argentina “le sentó de maravillas”, como dicen por España, y como está jubilada ahora sin su taller que le daba tanto trabajo, está llena de planes para viajar, descansar y distraerse. Espero que eno se empiece a deprimir cuando esté sola porque hasta ahora estuvo con muchas visitas, pero creo que cuando se acostumbre a no trabajar como un burro se va a sentir mucho mejor. Por ahora está muy bien de ánimo y de salud.
Oscar se fue hoy a Barcelona por dos días, por trabajo, pero lo va a ver a Roberto García, aunque sea un rato a la noche. Parece que García anda un poco enfermo, así que la visita le vendrá bien.
Bueno, me voy a escribirles a mis tías. Mis primos se están casando a diestra y siniestra y tengo que escribirles a todas.
