Summer holidays in Britain - Vacaciones de verano en Gran Bretaña
London, 13th September 1989
Dear Alejandrina,
We have been back from our holidays for 13 days but it feels like centuries because, as usual, one dives into the many things to do and time flies.
The children started school on the 5th; it meant a big change because Pablo started secondary school and it is as if, mentally, he had grown a whole year. He is more serious and responsible, travels to school and back on the Underground with a friend, does his homework without being told, his clothes are not a disgrace when he comes home, instead he looks after his uniform, which looks beautiful (navy blazer and trousers, white shirt and blue and red striped tie). He is quite the young man.The holidays were great, we had never been to more than one or two places in the country and everywhere we visited was very beautiful…We travelled a lot, but stopping a few days here and there to rest. We put the car on the train to Edinburgh, Scotland, and stayed there four days. Marvellous. Then we started driving south and stayed 5 days in the Lake District, the most beautiful place we ever saw, but very humid. It is extremely green and full of flowers.

I am enclosing some photos that Pablo had in his camera since last year and you will recognise, a photo of Oscar at the entrance to your house that I had not sent and the rest from the holidays. There are two photos of the front of a small hotel where we stayed one night, completely covered in flowers. There were climbers and hanging baskets, you cannot imagine such beauty.
In one photo with Pablo, Oscar put the viewer’s cover over his eye, like a monocle. In another, Oscar is standing with the children next to a rock with SCOTLAND written on it, marking the border with England. It was raining very hard in a very high wind, but the crazy Scots were standing there, playing the bagpipes so the tourists could take photos and give them a few coins. We had to stop as well!
Well, Ale, don’t worry if sometimes we don’t write, we are fine, it is just that time flies.
A big hug,

Querida Alejandrina:
Patricia.
