Summer 1989. School holidays have started - Verano 1989. Las vacaciones escolares comenzaron.

London, 27th July 1989
Dear Alejandrina,

We have received your letters; there is not much news to tell because we have talked recently on the phone, but as we imagine things are getting intolerable over there, I wanted to write as soon as possible. Also, sometimes we don’t realize how time flies.

A few days ago a friend of ours arrived from Buenos Aires and told us that the situation is quite terrible, that’s why Oscar phoned; we are worried about how you are coping.

The school holidays have just started and Pablo finished his primary school with quite good marks. As a reward he got a new bicycle and he is very happy because he completed a cycling proficiency course at school to be able to ride on the road. Now he is a grown man of twelve who pedals everywhere. He proudly cycled to school on the last days of class but I don’t think we will allow him to cycle to secondary school though, because it is farther away and there is a lot of traffic, but perhaps he will be able to do it when he is older and more experienced. Pablo is very serious and responsible, but in traffic there is always some danger.

We will be going to Scotland in two weeks time and if the weather holds we will have a great time because at the moment it’s warm and sunny every day, just like in Buenos Aires!

Oscar is tired, he needs these holidays and he cannot wait to set off. He has worked very hard this year and, being as pig-headed as he is, nobody can talk him into slowing down a bit. Luckily there has been a transport strike every Wednesday for the last few weeks and he’s had no choice but to stay at home. Although he brings work home, at least he is spared the effort of travelling and I can pour him mate while he works. We enjoy being together at home one day a week.

Well, Alejandrina, I haven’t said anything about your granddaughter, who is looking tall, beautiful, ladylike and very dainty. She has finished her first year and will start second year in September. She likes school but the last few days she was getting tired and complaining a lot when she had to get up to go to school. Luckily the holidays have started! Now she asks everyday when are we going to the hotel. She loves to sleep in hotels!

I will say goodbye because it is time to eat and the kids are hungry. Oscar is about to arrive and he gets home ravenous. Lots of kisses from all of us,

Querida Alejandrina:

Recibimos sus cartas y como hace poco hablamos por teléfono no hay mucho que contar, pero quería escribir lo antes posible porque nos imaginamos que allá la cosa se debe estar poniendo insoportable y a veces se nos pasa el tiempo y no nos damos cuenta.
Hace unos cuantos días llegó de Buenos Aires un amigo y nos contó que la situación es bastante terrible, por eso Oscar llamó y nos preocupa bastante pensar en cómo se las estarán arreglando. Nosotros acabamos de empezar las vacaciones de la escuela y Pablo terminó su primaria con bastante buenas notas. Como recompensa recibió una nueva bicicleta y anda muy contento porque hizo un curso en la escuela donde le enseñaron a andar por la calle o sea que ahora es todo un hombre de 12 años que pedalea para todos lados. Los últimos días de escuela fue en bici, muy orgulloso. A la secundaria no sé si lo vamos a dejar ir en bicicleta porque es más lejos y hay mucho tráfico, pero quizás cuando sea más grande y tenga más experiencia podrá hacerlo. Es muy serio y responsable, pero en el tráfico siempre es un poco peligroso.

Ahora nos quedan dos semanitas antes de irnos para Escocia y si el tiempo sigue así lo pasaremos regio porque hace calor y sol todos los días, ¡parece Buenos Aires!

Oscar anda cansado, las vacaciones le vendrán bien, ya no vé la hora de que lleguen. Este año ha trabajado mucho y como es tozudo no hay quien lo convenza de que pare un poco. Por userte estas últimas semanas hubo huelga de transporte todos los miércoles y se tiene que quedar en casa, aunque se trae trabajo al menos no tiene que viajar y you le puedo cebar mate. Los pasamos bien un día por semana juntos en casa.

Bueno, Alejandrina, no le conté nada de su nieta que está hermosa, alta y señorita, muy graciosa. Terminó su primer grado y en septiembre empieza el segundo. La escuela le gusta pero se estaba cansando y los últimos días se quejaba cuando había que levantarse para ir a la escuela. ¡Menos mal que empezaron las vacaciones!
Ahora me pregunta todos los días cuándo nos vamos al hotel. ¡Le encanta dormir en hoteles!
Me despido porque es la hora de comer y los críos tienen hambre. Está por llegar Oscar y viene con un hambre bárbara. Muchos besos de todos nosotros,
