June 1990
Dear Alejandrina,
I feel very guilty for not writing for a long time especially as you have been ill. I am glad you are better; there is nothing worse than a backache. It is impossible even to walk. I had the same problem a couple of years ago, when I lifted something heavy and pulled a muscle on my back. I was in pain for months and since then I take great care when lifting heavy objects. I can’t even lift Francesca because I am afraid, although during the night, when I take her to the toilet, sometimes I feel the familiar pull on my back. I am fearful of that pain that stops one from doing anything and takes a long time to heal.
Talking about something else, we’ve had a spectacular spring. The wisteria flowered as never before, the pear trees, the tulips I planted last year, everything put on a marvellous show. In April it was warm the whole month and for Easter the weather was summery and we enjoyed it enormously. Now, just after Pablo’s birthday, the cold weather came back although moderately and it rained for a few days, but it was good for the garden which was very dry.
Oscar talked with you recently, so you know that he is all right, but busy and in a hurry, as usual. If truth were told, at the moment we are all very well, in harmony and happy. The children are doing well at school, work is always going well and although I would like Oscar not to work so hard, it is impossible because this is the way he likes things and perhaps he wouldn’t know what to do if he did not work so much. I do not think he can change after all this years. At least he is happy and successful doing what he enjoys. The important thing is that he is happy.
In any case we try to go out as much as possible, or have friends over, so he rests and has fun at the weekends.
Pablo is thirteen now and is a real young man. He has reached my height and the doctor says he will have a growth spurt this year. His shoe size is 43 and I cannot imagine what will it be next year. I will have to look up to talk to him. He is a very good boy, is doing very well at school and learning the clarinet. It is very funny to see him sometimes behave like a big boy and sometimes like a small child. We still have our struggles, especially about tidiness and cleanliness (shower, brushing teeth, etc.) but we are starting to understand each other better. The main thing is that he is very good and very loving.
Francesca is a cute, happy go lucky girl, she is also growing tall and lost two upper front teeth, so she looks very funny at the moment. The permanent ones are growing now and are enormous; I don’t know how will they fit in her tiny jaw.I hope you’ll like the photos, in which the children look lovely. Pablo looks a bit chubby but now the doctor put him on a diet he’s lost one kilo and looks beautiful. There is still some way to go because he was 8 kg overweight, but little by little and growing at the same time, he will become slimmer. Pablo did not like being overweight so the doctor referred him to a nutritionist; she took sweets, cakes and fried food out of his diet, that is, everything he likes best but is fattening, so now he is eating more fruit and vegetables, which he didn’t touch before, and is feeling lighter. He has the same tendency to put on weight Oscar has, so he will always have to look after himself. It can’t be helped.
I will say goodbye now with a big hug. Kisses to everyone, the Gambinos and the Maglionis, and for you, from Patricia

Junio 1990
Querida Alejandrina,
