January 1990 - After the festivities - Después de las fiestas

London, 16th January 1989
Dear Alejandrina,

Happy New Year! Incredibly, we are already in mid January! I can only now say that we are back to normality since December 21st, when school broke up and my mother arrived, so many things happen for the Christmas holidays and we see so many people… Here Christmas and the New Year extend for three weeks to a month if you include Francesca’s birthday.

We’ve had a very good time, with friends’ parties and my family, including my sister’s little girl who is already one and a half years old and is lovely, very lively and strong. She runs around and climbs everything, there is nothing she cannot reach and is very quick to learn.

Oscar managed to rest enough but already on the first week of January he’s had to travel to Chicago. He spent a few days between Chicago and New York, working.Now he is immersed back in his usual routine. However, he enjoyed the relaxation of the holidays even painted a picture he likes very much. I am sending you some photos of the artist at work and with the finished painting. I am also including a photo of our rabbit, Timothy. It has now grown very large and we cannot let him out into the garden because everything is starting to grow (the weather is lovely and spring like) and he eats all the new growth. I let him loose to run around in the lean to where there is some space and then he goes back to his little home. He’s got floppy years, which gives him a very funny expression. Although he is very cuddly and Pablo holds him in the evening, when he goes all soppy because he loves to be stroked, Francesca finds it difficult to hold as he is so big and has long nails. She doesn’t like the feel of his nails, but at least she can stroke him.

We know that things are difficult over there, how are the Gambinos managing? I hope you are not hard up with the high inflation. Sometimes from here it is difficult to realise how hard it must be over there. Please let us know if you are OK or are having problems.

Querida Alejandrina:

¡Felíz Año Nuevo! ¡Parece mentira que ya estamos a mediados de enero! Recién hoy puedo decir que volvemos a la normalidad, desde el 21 de diciembre que los chicos terminaron la escuela y llegó mi mamá, con esto de las vacaciones de navidad se hacen tantas cosas y se ve tanta gente...
Aquí Navidad y Año Nuevo se prolongan por tres semanas o un mes contando el cumpleaños de Francesca.

Lo pasamos muy bien, con reuniones de amigos y mi familia, incluída la nena de Pamela que ya tiene un año y medio y es una preciosura, muy simpática y fuerte. Corre por todos lados y se sube a todo. No hay nada que no alcance y aprende todo rapidísimo.

Oscar consiguió descansar bastante, pero ya la primera semana de enero se tuvo que ir a Chicago y se pasó unos días entre Chicago y Nueva York, por trabajo. Ahora ya está zambullido en la rutina de siempre. Sin embargo, disfrutó del descanso de las fiestas y hasta pintó un cuadro que le gusta mucho. Le mando unas fotos del artista al trabajo y con la pintura terminada. Además, una fotod e Timothy, nuestro conejito. Ahora ya creció mucho mas y no lo podemos dejar en el jardín suelto porque todo está empezando a crecer (el tiempo está hermoso y primaveral y se como todos los brotes nuevos.

Lo dejo suelto en el cobertizo del costado para que tenga lugar y luego entra en su casita. Tiene las orejas caídas, lo que le dá una expresión muy cómica. Es muy mimoso y a la noche Pablo lo tiene en los brazos y se pone todo reblandecido porque le gusta que lo acaricien. A Francesca le resulta difícil tenerlo en brazos porque es grande y tiene uñas largas. A ella no le gusta sentir las uñas, pero por lo menos lo acaricia. Sabemos que allá las cosas andan muy mal ¿Cómo se arreglan los Gambinos? Espero que Ud no haya pasado un mal rato con la inflación que hay. Desde aquí a veces a uno se le pasa el tiempo y no nos damos cuenta que allá puede estar bravo. Por favor díganos si está bien o tiene problemas.
