Dear Teresa,

Thank you for your letter and congratulations. My little Pablo is huge, he is only two and a half months old and is already “doing things”, such as smiling and chatting a lot. He adores a good natter and to be entertained. He is an adorable baby and with Oscar sometimes we ask ourselves why didn’t we have a baby earlier. It is lovely to have a little son; we both have a lot of fun with him. Alejandrina will love her new grandson. I hope your little Pablo won’t miss her too much, tell him that this Pablo is just borrowing granny for a little while and we’ll return her later. I would love for you all to meet him now but it will have to be when he is a little older. For now, I hope you’ll have an idea of what he is like from the photos I sent your mum and Alicia (when I have more I will send you some) although he is more beautiful in person (how we mothers dote on our children!). He is always smiling and “talking”, he says “ago” and “ajo”, in English and in Spanish, with excellent pronunciation. This child is very intelligent.


His father is so proud that his shirt is getting too small (partly due to his getting fatter). Yesterday I took him to the studio where Oscar works and he caused great commotion and admiration. He is so like Oscar that everyone was asking when would he grow a beard because that is all he needs to be Oscar’s spitting image.
OK Teresa, give everyone my love. We have to write to granny but tell her that her great new grandson and we send her much love.

Querida Teresa:

Gracias por tu carta y las felicitaciones. Mi Pablito está enorme, ya tiene 2 meses y medio y ya “hace cosas” como reírse y charlar muchísimo. No hay cosa que le guste más que la charla y que le jueguen. Es un bebé amoroso y con Oscar a veces pensamos por qué no lo habremos tenido antes.
Es muy lindo tener un hijito y los dos nos divertimos mucho con él. Creo que a Alejandrina le va a encantar cuando vea a su nuevo nieto. Espero que tu Pablito no la extrañe demasiado, decile que éste Pablo se la pide prestada a la abuela por un tiempito nada más, después se la devuelve. Me gustaría tanto que Uds. lo conozcan! Pero que se le va a hacer, ya lo conocerán cuando esté más grandecito. Por ahora espero que se den una idea de cómo es por las fotos que les mandé a tu mamá y a Alicia (no me quedan más, más adelante te mando a vos). Aunque en persona es mucho más precioso (como somos de chochas las madres).

Se la pasa riéndose y charlando, dice “agó” y “ajó” en inglés y en español, con muy buena pronunciación. Es muy inteligente este chico.

El padre está tan orgulloso que no cabe en su camisa (aunque eso en parte se debe a su gordura habitual). Ayer lo llevé al estudio donde trabaja Oscar y produjo gran revuelo y admiración. Se parece mucho a Oscar y todo el mundo me preguntaba cuándo se va a dejar la barba. Es lo único que le falta para ser idéntico.
Bueno Teresa, dales muchos cariños a todos, a la abuelita tenemos que escribirle pero decile que le mandamos muchos besos de nosotros y de su nuevo biznieto.

How time flies! Pablo is 30 today. Happy birthday, son!

London, 10th May 1977

Dear Granny,

I am in hospital and at the foot of my bed there is the cot with the new little Grillo. ¿Are you happy to have another great-grandson? He is a beautiful baby, large and chubby. He looks a lot like Oscar and is a darling, cries only when bothered. His hands are very large, like mine, and he sucks them all the time with great vigour.
The birth was quite quick and Oscar was the first to see him, apart from the midwife. It was a good delivery, I had epidural anaesthetics and the baby was born soon after, without forceps or any difficulty. He looks very healthy and strong. I am breast-feeding and he suckles very powerfully. At birth he weighed 3.91kg and he looks like he’ll be tall, like his dad. He’s got quite a lot of dark brown hair; I think he’ll be dark-haired like Oscar. We are very happy with the baby, it seems incredible that he is ours and we’ll be allowed to take him home. I can’t wait for you could see him, we’ll have to visit you soon so you can meet him, but for now we’ll have Alejandrina over to meet her new English grandson. When she comes, probably around July, the baby will be about three months old and it will be possible to tell who he looks like. I think her visit is going to be very nice, it will be summer and we can drive her around to show her the lovely places there are in London. We’ll enjoy it very much.

I hope everyone is fine, and ¿how is Fernandito, now the youngest of the family but one? I can imagine how happy Fátima must be because now I can see for myself how wonderful it is to have a baby. I cannot wait to take him home. The hospital stay for a first baby is 10 days and we still have a week to go. In the meantime there is a lot to learn, how to breastfeed, how to change nappies, to bathe the baby, and so on. Luckily he is very well behaved, a paragon of a baby.

We still don’t have a name, it’s difficult to decide because the name has to sound good in English as well as Spanish or he might have problems at school.

Querida abuelita:

Estoy en el hospital y delante de mi cama está la cunita con el nuevo Grillito. ¿Está contenta de tener otro biznieto? Es un precioso bebé, grande y redondito. Se parece mucho a Oscar y es un amor, llora muy poco y solamente cuando lo molestan. Tiene unas manos muy grandes, como yo, y se las chupa con mucho vigor todo el tiempo. Nació bastante rápido y el primero que lo vió, aparte de la partera, fue Oscar. Fue un parto muy bueno, me dieron anestesia epidural y el bebé nació enseguida, sin forceps ni dificultades. Se lo ve muy sanito y fuerte. Le doy de mamar y lo hace con gran fuerza. Pesaba al nacer 3.91 kg y se ve que va a ser alto como el papá.

Tiene bastante pelo, de color castaño oscuro, creo que va a ser morocho como Oscar. Estamos contentísimos con él, parece increíble que sea nuestro y nos lo llevemos a casa. Me gustaría que lo vieran, vamos a tener que ir por allá pronto para que lo conozcan. Por ahora esperamos que venga Alejandrina, posiblemente para julio, así conoce a su nuevo nieto inglés. Para cuando ella venga ya tendrá unos tres meses así que ya se va a poder saber a quién se parece. Creo que va a ser muy linda la visita, será pleno verano e iremos a pasear con el auto para que Alejandrina conozca los lindos lugares de por aquí. Lo vamos a pasar muy bien.

¿Cómo andan todos por allá? ¿Cómo está Fernandito, el más chiquito de por allá? Me imagino cómo estará Fátima de contenta porque ahora que tengo el mío me doy cuenta de la maravilla que es tener un bebé. No veo la hora de llevármelo a casa. Saldremos del hospital dentro de una semana porque para el primer bebé la estadía en el hospital es de 10 días. Mientras tanto tenemos que aprender todo: cómo amamantar, cómo cambiar pañales y bañar al bebé. Por suerte él se porta muy bien, es un bebé ejemplar.

Todavía no sabemos qué nombre ponerle, es muy difícil elegirlo porque tiene que sonar bien en inglés también, si no va a tener problemas cuando vaya a la escuela.

Nearly there - Falta poco

London, April 1977

Dear Alejandrina,

Today we received your latest and we got the parcel with the fruit cheeses a few days ago. ¡Delicious! ¡Thank you! We ate all the sweet potato cheese immediately and already opened the quince one. I made a “pasta frolla” and it was very good and the rest of the preserves will not last long, although we prefer the sweet potato one. I am so glad you liked the film. We could have put sound to it if we had known there was someone who had a sound projector. We’ll do it next time, when we film the little Grillo. I’ve only got three weeks to go but the “official” date could vary a couple of days either side. My belly is so enormous, I cannot move. Oscar laughs at me because when I lie down I can’t get up and lie there, feet in the air, like a huge tortoise. Until now I was not too heavy and could move around easily, but for the last few days I have felt gigantic and it takes great effort to do anything. I’m pleased that I have managed to finish everything I needed to do before the birth and now I can wait calmly for the day.
Apart from feeling so heavy I am well, and so is the baby because it moves a lot.
The doctor told me it’s a big baby, or at least tall, like its father or grandmother Alejandrina.

Two days ago we had cousin Norberto visiting. Very nice. He’ll be around for a few days and we’ll probably meet him again.
Talking of visits, what do you think of coming over around July or August? It’s summer here so you would save yourself a bit of your winter and the summer is nice over here. The baby will be three or four months then, which is a nice age, isn’t it? That is just an idea, but of course you have to decide. We’d buy the ticket from here and you would only have to go and get it in Buenos Aires. As soon as you let us know when you’d like to come over we will arrange everything. It would be a good idea to get your passport ready so you can travel when you want.
OK Alejandrina, thanks again for the sweets and the good wishes. Give my love to the family. Don’t you have any photos to send us? Especially of the children, who must have grown so much! Kisses and hugs to everyone and for you the biggest kiss from

Querida Alejandrina:

Hoy llegó su última carta y hace unos días la encomienda con el dulce. ¡Delicioso! ¡Gracias! El de batata nos lo liquidamos enseguida y ya abrimos el de membrillo, con el cual hice una pasta frolla que quedó rica. El resto del dulce no creo que dure mucho, aunque nos gusta más el de batata. Me alegro que les haya gustado la película, si hubiéramos sabido que había alguien con proyector sonoro podíamos haberle pusto sonido, será para la próxima, cuando filmemos una con el grillito. Ya me faltan sólo tres semanas, aunque esa es la fecha “oficial” y tanto puede ser antes como después. Mi panza es tan enorme que no me puedo ni mover. Cuando me acuesto Oscar se ríe porque no puedo levantarme y quedo patas arriba como una gran tortuga. Hasta ahora no estuve muy pesada y me movía con facilidad, pero desde hace unos días me siento enorme y me cuesta mucho hacer cosas. Menos mal que hice todo lo que queria terminar antes del nacimiento y ahora puedo esperar el día con calma. Aparte de la pesadez me siento muy bien y el bebé también, porque se mueve que da gusto y me dijo el médico que es grande, o al menos largo, como su padre y su abuela Alejandrina.

Hace unos días llegó el primo Norberto. Muy simpático. Va a estar por aquí unos dias y nos veremos otra vez.
En cuanto a su visita, ¿qué le parece para julio o agosto? Se ahorraría un poco del invierno de allá y aquí el verano es lindo. Para entonces el bebé tendrá unos tres o cuatro meses, que es un buen tiempo, no? Es una idea, pero por supuesto es Ud. la que tiene que decidir. El pasaje lo sacamos desde aquí y lo único que tendría que hacer sería retirarlo en Buenos Aires. Así que en cuanto nos diga para cuándo quiere venir vamos a hacer el trámite. Sería bueno si Ud. pudiera ir viendo la cuestión del pasaporte, que allá tarda a veces, así puede viajar cuando quiera.

Bueno Alejandrina, gracias otra vez por el dulce y los buenos deseos. Cariños a toda la familia. ¿No tienen alguna foto para mandarnos? Sobre todo de los chicos, que deben estar crecidísimos. Abrazos y besos para todos, y para Ud. un beso grande de
