New Year's eve at Franco and Raffaella's

Dear mum, dear sisters, dear cousins, uncles and aunts, nephews and granny!
I am behaving like a real pig, I don’t deserve forgiveness, oh, oh, oh, do you realize how long it’s been since I wrote to you? (Lamentations: oh…ah…oh…ah…!)
I promise to walk over rice and corn on my knees to expiate the sin of being such a lazy layabout.
(More lamentations: oh…ah…oh…ah…!).

OK, I hope that after showing so much contrition I am forgiven. Thank you.

So, now I will start in order: To everyone, Happy Christmas and New Year!
To Teresa, Happy Birthday, sister! To Granny, Happy Birthday, grandmother!

I will start from the beginning:

I am fine, although here there is a massive f**ing crisis. In addition to there being a massive f**ing crisis it is f**ing cold, especially today!

We have been partying. We cooked a turkey for Christmas and had 30 guests and gatecrashers at home. For New Year’s Eve we went to some Italian friends’ house. During all of this Patricia’s mum and sister were with us, they have been around, in London, for a month (and they intend to stay for another month!). They go everywhere in there fantastic camper van.

We had a fortnight holiday because Christmas & the New Year fell on Monday and Tuesday, so it would have been ridiculous to work in between.
I repeat: it’s colder than it has ever been. At work today we were all wearing our overcoats; I suspect it will snow tonight or tomorrow. At home we are comfortable and warm, we have our two electric heaters on all day. To think that you must be baking in the heat!

My mother in law told us that my nephews and niece are all beautiful and charming. But it’s to be expected; they are my nephews and niece!

It’s very late, nearly eleven pm and I am very sleepy. Patricia and I are sitting on a sofa in front of the heater. She knits and I write. The news on the radio and says that the economic situation in this country is a mess. Patricia tells me to pass on her mother’s regards.

On the coffee table we have: a mirror, a pig shaped money box, a basket with nuts, the radio, a flower pot, a smaller pig that is also a money box, an ashtray, matches, another plant, a table lamp made of terracotta someone brought us from Israel, a china bell, another ashtray made of bronze in the shape of a pipe, little Spanish vases, some glass marbles, a dried orange and a wire toy that was given to Patricia.

OK, I am off to bed, millions of kisses to all, love and hugs. I solemnly promise to write more often from now on. Felíz Año Nuevo!

Querida mama, queridas hermanas, queridos primos, tíos, sobrinos y abuelita:

Me estoy portando como un auténtico cerdo, no tengo perdón. Oh, oh, oh, ¿se dan cuenta cuánto hace que no escribo?
(Lamentaciones: oh…ah…oh…ah…!) Prometo caminar de rodillas sobre maíz y arroz para pagar mi culpa. La culpa de ser tan vago y perezoso.
(Más lamentaciones: oh…ah…oh…ah…!)

Bueno, espero que luego de esta demostración de arrepentimiento estoy perdonado. Gracias.

Ahora me pongo en orden:

Ahora cuento mi vida:

Estoy bien. A pesar de lo bien que estoy aquí hay una crisis de la gran puta. Además de que aquí hay una crisis de la gran puta, hace un frío de la gran puta. Especialmente hoy.

Estuvimos de farra. En Navidad hicimos un pavo y tuvimos 30 invitados y colados, en Año Nuevo fuimos a lo de unos tanos amigos. Todo esto con la madre y la hermana de Patricia que hace un mes que andan por aquí (¡y se piensan quedar por un mes más!) Andan en su fantástica casa rodante de aquí para allí.

Estuvimos unos 15 días de vacaciones pues las fiestas caían en lunes y martes por lo tanto era ridículo ir a laburar los días siguientes. Repito: hace tanto frío como nunca hizo. Hoy laburábamos con el sobretodo puesto. Sospecho que esta noche o mañana va a nevar. Aquí en casa se está bien y calentito, tenemos 2 (dos) estufas prendidas todo el santo día. ¡Y pensar que ustedes se han de estar reventando de calor!

Mi suegra nos contó que los sobrinos (¡míos!) están todos hermosísimos y dice que son un encanto. Lógico, ¡¡como que son mis sobrinos!!

Es tarde, son casi las once de la noche y me viene un sueño bárbaro. Estamos sentados en un sillón Patricia y yo, frente a la estufa. Ella teje y yo escribo. Por radio pasan el noticiero y hablan de qué jodido está el panorama económico en este país.

Patricia me dice que les diga que la madre les manda saludos. En la mesita ratona tenemos a saber: un espejo, una alcancía que es un chancho, un canasto con nueces, la radio, una flor en maceta, otro chancho más chico que también es alcancía, un cenicero, fósforos, otra planta, una lámpara de terracota que nos trajeron de Israel, una campana de porcelana, una pipa de bronce que es un cenicero, jarroncitos españoles, bolitas de vidrio, una naranja seca y un juguete de alambre que le regalaron a Patricia.


Bué, yo me voy a dormir. Les mando un millón de besos, cariños y abrazos. Prometo solemnemente escribir más seguido desde ahora. ¡¡Happy New Year!!
