End of the year - Fín de Año

London, December 1976

Carísima mama:

Patricia made me sit down to write because she’s been nagging me for a long time to write to you. I should have written yesterday, as I had promised but a friend came to visit unexpectedly from Paris and I couldn’t write, but at last here I am writing (count how many times I have used the verb “to write” above).

OK, I apologize for the delay.

Now for the latest news: Patricia’s belly is growing fast and we are almost sure it's twins. We have painted “its” room, a tiny one next to our bedroom. To say “we have painted” is not an honest statement on my part because here the only one who paints is Donna Patricia and if it were up to me…you know me well enough. Patricia says that the only thing I am not lazy about is drawing, but for anything else…
We already have the cot, clothes and carrycot, bought from a friend that “already had”. Everything is in perfect condition and cost very little. Patricia also bought some unleaded paint for the cot because it has been gnawed by tiny baby teeth.
We are still thinking about the name. I think that the best one is Sandalio, if’it’s a boy and Tota (or Porota), if it’s a girl.

We remembered Alicia’s birthday but left sending her a card until it was too late and we were in Paris, so I take this opportunity to wish her a “Very happy birthday, Alicia!”. She shares her birthday, October 25th, with Picasso.

The package hasn’t arrived yet but they usually take time so we are not worried. I will write when it gets here, thank you very much.
I am furious at García because he hasn’t shown you the film. You should insist and I will write him about it. Perhaps you could hire a Super 8 projector, it probably wouldn’t be too expensive for a weekend (here it is very reasonable) Alicia or Tito might know where to hire one.

We have just had dinner and now we are listening to a concert on the radio. Soon we’ll switch on the TV and watch a good Gene Kelly flick. I am having coffee to keep awake because at this time I am always sleepy, especially because last night we stayed up chatting to Jorge, our friend from Paris.

I am doing fantastically well at work and it seems that next year will be even better. Maybe we will be able to invite you over to meet your English grandson. We’ll talk about this soon. Give aunty Gilda and Ruben my love, tell Tito that we think about him all the time. If our cousin lives in Milan we could possibly visit her one-day so send me her address.
We are spending New Year with a family of friends who are coming to visit from Madrid. I don’t know how we’ll spend Christmas but we’ll probably organize something with our local friends. Next week I have to go to Holland about a job. Amsterdam is a small city, very nice, with canals and pretty houses that seem like made for dolls, but everything is bloody expensive, excuse my French. At least, everything is expensive if you come from England where the economic crisis brought down the pound sterling and to buy anything abroad (in the Continent, as they say here) costs an arm and a leg. Although to get to the Argentinean crisis level there is still a long way to go.

We switch on the TV and a blond, friendly, pale man tells us about recently published books.

I am the “king of the cup-and-ball”. I want to inform you that we bought one in Paris. This is a toy unknown outside the American Continent. When I was a boy I couldn’t play it to save my life but now, dear ones, I am a tiger.

OK, the film I was expecting is about to start. I send you a very, very big kiss and to everyone else a big embrace! To granny an enormous hug! Congratulations to Fatima!

That's a swanky pair of overalls he's sporting there.
Did he stand in the garden with a pitchfork and a red pointed hat?

Oscar discovered how comfortable dungarees were when he started to put on weight to match my growing belly. Once he even attended an advertising award ceremony (a black tie affair) at the Grosvenor Hotel wearing white dungarees.
