Today is the 28th aniversary of the events told in this letter - Hoy se cumplen 28 años del evento que cuenta esta carta

20th March 1980

Dear Alejandrina, dear family,

Well, what follows will explain the long period elapsed between my letters. Please take it easy because everything is all right now.
On January 25th I went to Paris to work. That afternoon, while at a friend’s house, I felt a sharp pain in my chest and down my left arm. We went to a chemist shop to ask for a painkiller but the pharmacist, with great honesty told me that I should go to a hospital to check it wasn’t my heart. My friend came with me in a taxi to the hospital where they checked me up. At that moment I had a heart attack. The doctors worked and worked to get me out of danger (thank goodness it happened in a hospital!).
Next day Patricia arrived (Pablo stayed at home with Tala, who just happened to be visiting. I (we) had to stay in hospital six weeks, which is the prescribed period in these cases. Luckily, it (Cochin) is one of the best hospitals in Europe to treat cardio-vascular disease.
After the six weeks they sent me back to London, accompanied by a medic, to another hospital (recommended by my boss who has great influence in medical circles).
My heart was ok but the doctors decided I needed an operation to repair a blocked artery; otherwise I could not have led a normal life. I would have been constantly fatigued.
I had the operation and it was a success. Now I am as good as new!
I hope you believe me because sometimes by letter one does not believe what is being told. Now I have another couple of weeks in hospital to allow the scar to heal and then I will go home. Then I will phone you and you will see that I am telling you the truth.

I am completely well and can live another hundred years because this was a lucky escape, thanks to my constitution and the doctors. With Patricia we are going to take a six months holiday, we’ll buy a caravan and travel around all of Europe’s sunny places (with Pablo, of course).
The doctors insist that I must exercise a lot, swim, run, go for walks and play golf (?).
They made me go on a diet and I am as slim as when I left Buenos Aires. I look 10 years younger (except for the baldness). Soon I will send a photo (I still have to loose about 8 kilos).

I repeat, it is all over and I am very well so please don’t be silly and worry. Pablo is really looking forward to my going back home (so am I). When he leaves the hospital he pulls me by a finger and says: “come to visit me!”

He speaks a lot, both in English and in Spanish and is very beautiful. He will be three in May and looks like a lad of six. He is very tall. At this very moment he is here with Patricia, eating half my broccoli and a huge ham and tomato sandwich. He tells me that it’s very cold outside and that yesterday his grandma (old mum, he calls her) is gone away in a plane. He is a little rascal. I am sending you a photo taken at Christmas so you can see how much he is grown.
Well, I will say goodbye now, with a kiss and a hug for everyone. Give my love to granny (it would be better not to tell her any of this, she would be shocked).
If the fatties in the family want to follow my advice, look out, being overweight is one of the causes of heart disease (worse still if you smoke!).
Today it’s 20th March, perhaps in a couple of weeks or so I will phone.
And to finish, I will say the immortal words: Don’t over dramatise or get too silly, everything is fine!
Cheers,
Oscar

Dear Alejandrina,

As you can see there was a reason for not writing. Being so far away, we didn’t want to scare or worry you all. Now Oscar is well and from his letter you will notice that he is his old self. Soon, in a week or 10 days, he will be home and we’ll start a new and better life, plenty of rest and no work. We have saved enough to allow Oscar to stop working for a long time so we will be together. Summer is starting and we will have long, sunny days to go out and enjoy life. Pablo is very well, my mum has gone back home and, as they say, all is well that ends well.
Many kisses to you all. When Oscar is back home we will phone you.
Kisses, kisses, kisses to everyone,

Patricia

Cara Alejandrina, cara familia:

tu lectora nuevamente fiel!

Diana! me haces sentir tan culpable! Gracias!
