A week before the end of that war - Una semana antes del final de esa guerra

London, 7th June 1982

Dear Alejandrina,

Here we are, carrying on, worried but well, we personally don’t have any problems except not being able to leave the country to go on holiday, but this doesn’t matter because we can go to the local countryside. I am telling you this to give you an idea of how insignificant is the only “problem” we have. This shows how well we are and that you musn’t worry about us. My father is also worried but I have also told him that we have not experienced any change toward us in the people we know. Naturally we are feeling terrible for what is going on because it is awful and inconceivable that so many young men are dieing, that our country is at war and that what is happening is happening.
The whole thing is an atrocity that makes it impossible for us to feel good at all. Unavoidably we are affected and suffering for those who are on the battlefield. Until this matter is resolved we are in suspense and unable to feel at ease.

However, we want you to know that in our daily life we carry on as normal, so please don’t worry on our account. Oscar is very affected by what is happening. He is very sensitive and really feels down but after all that is what life is about and unfortunately very few people go through their whole life without experiencing this kind of test. It worries me that he feels very much in his own flesh for those who are suffering but his doctor keeps a close eye on him and says that physically he is normal, healthy and well. He is keeping his weight down and is pleased with his work, which is what interests him most.
In any case, there is nothing we can do. Like everything else, this situation will be over sooner or later and all we can do is hope that, if at all possible, some good will result of so many lost lives and of the suffering of so many families.

Pablo is growing big and we recently celebrated his birthday. Twenty children came to the party, which went very well. Until I saw them all around the table I had no idea of how many 20 children would be. I was startled at the number but they were so well behaved that there seemed to be less of them. He is happy because at last he is 5 and is “a big boy” who loves going to school. He reads and writes in English and Spanish almost right through and is an enthusiast, like his dad. He is mischievous, likes to joke and play and mess about, but is also very nice and worries because he realises what is happening. Sometimes it seems he is not listening but then he says something that shows he is aware of everything we say and of the news on TV and radio. The other day he said that when the war is over we would go to visit his cousins. Yesterday he saw a photo of soldiers in the Falklands amid explosions. Without prompting, he told Oscar what was going on in the photo and added: “I don’t want that to happen to my nephews” (he meant his cousins).
He knows something terrible is going on although it’s too complicated for him to understand what it’s about. Even we cannot understand it, let alone him.

Well, Alejandrina, I hope you are well and that you will be reassured with regard to our well being. Any problems we might have are insignificant compared to what is happening over there.

This letter is also for Alicia and Teresa and also their families because we can’t send too many letters to our friends in Paris to be redirected to Buenos Aires. I also have to write to my dad and my aunts.
Kisses to everyone and a lot of love from

Patricia

PS: Love to granny from us three.PS 2: Your letter arrived from Portugal. If you want you can write via Paris to the address on the envelope. Did you get Oscar’s previous letter?

Londres, 7 de junio de 1982

Querida Alejandrina:

As.
